Worming Talk at Derby House Wrightington

This Thursday evening, 10th November, we held a special worming talk at our Wrightington store, we asked on our facebook page for any questions you might like to ask Laurie May and here are her answers:

Ellen Higginbottom asked:

“what do i do if i suspect my horse has worms?”

Laurie: “The best way to know for sure is to do a Worm Egg Count and treat according to the results. If the worm egg count in more than 200 eggs per gram then you will need to treat accordingly. Please note the FWEC (faecal Worm Egg Count) does not detect tapeworm or Bots, this can only be detected with a blood test carried out by a vet.”

Sheree Powell asked:

“Does invermectin type wormer effect feather mites?”

Laurie: Ivermectin does not treat for Feather Mite. You would need to discuss an appropriate treatment with your vet.

Louise Revill asked:

”Are there any worms or parasites my 29 year tb would be more prone to?”

Laurie: Older horses are as susceptible as young horses. It’s recommended you carry out a Faecal Egg Worm Count and treat accordingly with a routine wormer. You would need to ask your Vet to carry out a Tapeworm Antigen Blood Test which would test for tapeworm and parasites other than Redworm and Round Worm.

Deborah Fransman asked:
“Hi, I do worm counts in feb and Oct, I also worm at that time of year with Pramox, if counts come back high I do another worm count a month later, is that ok? Is it ok to only use one type of wormer each time?”
Laurie: Continue to worm count in February, if the results are low (under 200 EPG) then just treat for tape worm using Equi Tape, if the results are high (over 200 EPG) then treat for Redworm and Tapeworm using a Moxidectin based wormer such as Pramox. A second worm count in summer is ideal and if the results of this test are low there is no need to treat at all. A worm count in October would not be necessary. It is fine to use the same wormer however the less we use wormers the less resistance will be caused. If you do a worm count in the Spring and Autumn and have low results you will need to worm the same as Spring. Remember to worm with an Ivermectin or Moxidectin based wormer in the winter to treat for Bots.

Our Autumn/Winter Range

“Are you printing an Autumn/Winter Catalogue this year?”

This is a question we have been asked quite a few times this season but to answer it directly, No we’re not producing a printed catalogue this season.

This is the first time we’ve not produced a catalogue, but have instead decided to focus our efforts on providing a much bigger range on our website. Whilst we are conscious that some people prefer a catalogue to browse, we feel that it is as important as ever in today’s economic climate to focus on providing real value for money. In massively expanding our range online to include hundreds of new products we are able to focus on the goal of keeping prices for our customers absolutely as low as possible.

Although not in print, you can find a neat 54 page virtual catalogue that highlights our new Autumn Winter rugs and leisurewear clothing range on the home page of our website. Please do take a look as there are some great new products featured in it.

Our other main focus this season has been to improve our product images, size guides and product information online. For our Autumn range we now have images for each colour as well as alternative views, all of which are much larger than ever before enabling you to zoom into the detail on every product.

We have also added size guides to most products directly helping you choose the right size for you.

If you’re looking for some good offers right now, our Autumn/Winter range is in its launch period so you can get 10% off almost everything on our website (excludes certain brands and products), there is 20% off all Derby House Jods and Breeches, and FREE delivery on all orders until the 20th October!

Now Instock at Derby House Wrightington – Sprenger Bits

Sprenger are the leading brand in design and manufacturing of horse bits –
The range is now stock in our flagship store along with a selection of trial bits you can borrow from our store to try in your horses mouth before your purchase – Sprenger focus on the comfort of the bit in the horses mouth which make the range perfect for use by every type of rider, whether you simply enjoy a nice hack or your jump round the Derby at Hickstead !

Top 5 things you should know about Sprenger bits

  1. Made from a patented material Aurigan. The only metal developed specifically for use in a horses mouth.
  2. Aurigan is an alloy made up of the following metals. Copper 85%, Silicon 4% Zinc 11%. The oxidizations process of copper encourages the horse to salivate, mouth and accept the bit.
  3. The lozenge in a KK bit is angled at 45 degrees which is the optimum angle for a double jointed bit to allow the lozenge to lie flat on the tongue. Sprenger identified this angle through years of research involving hundreds of X rays etc.
  4. A double jointed bit with an angled lozenge allows better communication to the horse through the bit whilst also being more comfortable for the horse. Avoiding the nipping action of a snaffle and pressure on the pallet when the contact is taken.
  5. Don’t forget to point out the arrow must always be on the left hand side of the horses mouth!!

Derby House wins Equestrian Social Media Award

ESMAsWe’re delighted to say that we have just found out that we have been awarded with an Equestrian Social Media Award, the first time these awards have ever been given out!

The team at the ESMA’s, as they have become known, set up the awards before Christmas, asking people around the world to nominate their favourite Equestrian Names/Brands/Magazines/Riders who regularly use Social media sites such as Facebook, twitter and Youtube to communicate with the equestrian world.

Here at Derby House, we have been using Facebook and twitter to communicate with our customers for some time and have seen huge benefits in being able to answer customer queries quickly through our pages. We loved the idea of the awards as soon as we heard about them and encouraged everyone to get nominating their social media favourites.

We we’re really proud to hear that our customers had nominated us for the awards and that we had made it to the finals, joining 117 other names from around the UK and the rest of the World. Voting then opened for people to place their votes and we are delighted to say that we were able to come top of our category for the “Best Use of Social Media By a UK Saddlery/Tack Shop”

All of the finalists were asked to create an acceptance video to be shown if they won, unfortunately because we are working very hard on our Spring Catalogue, we were unable to finish our video in time, however we will hopefully be finishing just after our catalogue launches!

We would like to thank everyone at the Social Media awards for creating and running this years awards, and we would also like to give a huge thank you to all of our Facebook and Twitter followers for nominating and voting for us! We would also like to congratulate all the other winners of this years awards and all those who reached the finals.

Remember if you want to speak to one of our customer services team, ask about your nearest store or enquire about a specific product you can always contact us through our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/DerbyHouse or by tweeting us @DerbyHouseLtd on twitter.

We look forward to chatting with you and to the 2012 ESMA’s next year!
